Picture this. You’re a West Hollywood resident working on your screenplay but it’s the middle of summer and your AC-less apartment is blazing hot. Time for a change of scenery. You pack up your laptop, head down to the local cafe, and order an iced latte—and a pre-roll packed with fragrant cannabis. Sound crazy? On September 1, that’s exactly what you’ll be able to do at the Lowell Cafe, located on North La Brea Avenue.
The West Hollywood Business License Commission’s unanimous approval of the cafe’s cannabis consumption license will make it the first business of its kind in the U.S. Since California doesn’t allow businesses to simultaneously sell cannabis and alcohol, Lowell Cafe will vend food, non-alcoholic beverages, and the parent company’s cannabis products during the day, then operate the bar and a cannabis cafe after 9pm. “It’s the end of prohibition,” says Sean Black, cofounder of Lowell Herb Co. “It’s really groundbreaking and exciting.” Other neighbors, like the rabbi of the synagogue across the street, are not so happy.
